Vocational Education and Training (VET)

A significant component of the country’s education program is vocational education and training, or VET. It is imperative that the essential components of providing vocational education and training be redefined in order to make them flexible, modern, relevant, inclusive, and creative in order for vocational education to effectively contribute to the changing national context and for India to reap the benefits of the demographic dividend. The government has already taken a number of significant steps in this area because it recognizes the vital role that vocational education plays. In India, a centrally supported program that was proposed in 1988 to offer an option to pursuing higher academic education today covers school-based vocational education.

Meeting the demand for middle-class, skilled labour for the expanding organized and unorganized economic sectors is one of the goals of NIOS’s Vocational Education Program. Throughout the years, the selection of Vocational Education courses has grown in response to student requirements and market expectations. Both the urban and rural sectors are intended audiences for the current NIOS Vocational Education courses.
